Indian Daal, Dahl, Dal, Split pea Soup Recipes

Basic Dal Soup

Cook as directed 1 C dry red lentils or split peas..

  • Meanwhile:
  • Saute 3 minutes
  • 3 T oil
  • ¾ C onions
  • 1 garlic
  • 1 t fresh ginger
  • 1 t chilis
  • ½ t cumin
  • Add:
  • ½ t turmeric
  • ½ t salt
  • 1 C chopped tomatoes
  • 1 t chili powder
  • ¼ t dry mustard
  • Cook 3 more minutes.
  • Add split peas.
  • Cook 5 more minutes
  • Garnish with fresh cilantro

Easy Dal, with optional Coconut and spinach

  • Combine in pot on stove
  • 1 C split Peas
  • 2 C water or broth
  • 1 t turmeric
  • ¼ t cayenne
  • ½ t salt
  • Boil then simmer 20 - 25 minutes
  • Saute
  • In 1 T margarine
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 ½ t cumin, ground cloves (optional) and pepper
  • Add to split peas and cook 5 more minutes.
  • Optional: Add 1/2 # spinach and ½ C canned coconut milk
  • Heat til wilted



Spiced Dal

  • Saute'
  • 1/4 C margarine
  • 1 1/2 C chopped onion
  • Add 2 T garlic
  • 2 Jalepinos (optional)
  • 1 T cumin
  • 2 C red lentils or split peas
  • 2 T ginger
  • 2 T garam masala
  • 1 T salt
  • 1 t pepper
  • 1 T sugar
  • 1 Bayleaf
  • Stir a couple minutes
  • Add:
  • 3/4 C tomatoes
  • 1/2 T vinegar
  • 8 C vegi broth or water
  • Boil / Simmer 45 minutes, +-, until tender and thick

Tips and ideas:

Serve with flat bread

Dal is tradtionally made with red lentils. (Other lentils will not be smooth without processing or cooking longer.) Split peas may be substituted, but do add their own flavor.
