Traditional Homemade Bagels
- Proof
- 1/2 C warm water
- 2 yeast
- 3 T sugar
- Add.
- 1 C water
- 1 T salt
- 2 T shortening
- Stir in flour then knead about 10 minutes…
- 5 C flour +-
- Cover Rise. Punch rise, Punch divide into larger than golf ball size and push thumb through center stretching a little, shaping the bagel. Place on greased baking sheet. Rise.
- Bring 8 C water to Boil. Add 1 T sugar.
- Carefully lower 1 bagel at a time into water. Boil 3 minutes turn, boil 2 more minutes.
- Remove and drip dry.
- (Optional: Brush tops with a little soymilk and sprinkle with your choice: poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic salt, caraway seeds…)
- Bake at 375 20-25 minutes
- Option: Add herbs to dough, or raisins, sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle tops too.
