Traditional Homemade Bagels

  • Proof
  • 1/2 C warm water
  • 2 yeast
  • 3 T sugar
  • Add.
  • 1 C water
  • 1 T salt
  • 2 T shortening
  • Stir in flour then knead about 10 minutes…
  • 5 C flour +-
  • Cover Rise. Punch rise, Punch divide into larger than golf ball size and push thumb through center stretching a little, shaping the bagel. Place on greased baking sheet. Rise.
  • Bring 8 C water to Boil. Add 1 T sugar.
  • Carefully lower 1 bagel at a time into water. Boil 3 minutes turn, boil 2 more minutes.
  • Remove and drip dry.
  • (Optional: Brush tops with a little soymilk and sprinkle with your choice: poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic salt, caraway seeds…)
  • Bake at 375 20-25 minutes
  • Option: Add herbs to dough, or raisins, sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle tops too.
